Bee Keeping

Thank you Clair Smith for such a fantastically well prepared, informative, interesting and tasty presentation on bee keeping.

We learnt so much about these industrious little creatures and about natural bee keeping.
  • The Queen Bee is the mother of all mothers, laying 2,000 eggs a day and over a million in her lifetime.  She has a whole host of attendants to take care of her every need.  They groom and feed her and collect her pheromone and share it with the bees around them who also share it with spreading its effect through the hive.
  • All bees are vegetarians, wasps are carnivores.
  • There are 1,500 species of native bees in Australia alone and 25,000 species worldwide.
  • If you think you would like to take up bee keeping you do need to be registered with the Department of Primary Industry.
Clair brought along her hives, protective gear, her boundless enthusiasm, extensive knowledge and several types of honey for us to sample and evaluate. It was a great night.

I know I have said it many times before, but we are so lucky to have wonderful women in our community willing to share their skills and talents with us.
